My partner and I left Whangaroa to dive on 5/3/17 between Stephenson and Cavalli Islands. We set two small lures and caught an ideal live bait, this was left out and slowly towed 15m behind. I was in the water and loaded my home-made Riffe blue-water 1700 gun. I had two 35L Rob Allen floats attached with a Riffe bungee and I was towed slightly behind the live bait. As I was being towed behind the boat my partner headed towards the Cavalli Islands. Three hours later she spotted dolphins and birds and headed towards them. Soon after I saw a marlin deep down circling the bait, I duck dived towards it to investigate. I saw a second bigger fish swimming broadside that I shot. After shooting the fish it did a surface run for about 30minutes before diving deep. After 10minutes of clipping off the bungee I had it closer. I asked my partner to throw me the second unloaded spear gun. I loaded the 130 Rob Allen rail gun then I swam down and put a second shot in the fish to hold it. I then pulled the fish to the surface and iki'd it. We managed to get the fish on to the boat and head for the weigh station.
