Our local club, Santa Barbara freedivers, held a 5 fish total weight combined spearfishing tournament on the 1st of July. Myself and two others headed out to the islands in hope of some large yellowtail and white sea bass. It was around 10 in the morning when I was swimming the outside of a large section of kelp when roughly 8' below me swam a school of 100 plus beefy barracudas. As the school overtook me I lined up on the largest one I could find and took a shot from above. Not realizing I had a potential record fish, I quickly retrieved him and put him in the cooler on the boat with the other fish of the day. Not until we returned to the ramp did we realize I had a potential world record fish.
