We were covering ground looking for hogfish when my friend, Chris Duperreault, spotted a large male hogfish in the distance feeding in the sand. As we approached the fish got spooked and swam up into a cave. I took a breath and dove down right as the fish emerged from the cave. I approached the fish very slowly and it let me get pretty close. It turned broadside and I shot him just behind the gills with a Manny Puig pole spear. I saw that the tip went completely through the fish and fought it to the surface. I then swam the fish back to the boat and continued to hunt.
