It was about 35-40 foot of water and I was spearfishing as a free diver in the women's division in the That's What She Shot Tournament where you could only enter your biggest snapper, grouper and hogfish. After about 30 minutes of being in the water I spotted a small but legal black grouper slowly swimming toward a ledge as i swam down i saw a school of 4 or 5 large mangrove snappers; since i knew that the black grouper wasn't going anywhere soon and that i might not see a mangrove that big for the rest of the tournament i decided to shoot a mangrove first, go back up to the surface, quickly slide him down the shaft on to my shooting line reload and go shoot the grouper. Right before i pulled the trigger on the mangrove i felt something to the right of me when i looked over i was met by the giant eye of a king mackerel. He was just swimming by me about 5 feet off the bottom; I aimed for behind his peck fin, prayed I wouldn't miss and pulled the trigger! When I hit him he immediatelly rolled to his side then bolted toward the surface!! I swam up with him and barely got a breath before he started dragging me around and stripping line off my reel, I was doing my best to keep up with him so he didn't rip off or take too much line before i could get him in the boat. I called for my mom (the boat driver) and my dad who was also in the water with me. Once i pulled him up to me my dad helped me hoist the fish into the boat. What a rush and truly a day I won't forget!! Not only did i Shoot the World Record King but also won the Woman's free diving division of biggest snapper and grouper!
