Two of my good friends (John Raber and Ryan Dinkel) and myself decided to go out for the opening season of amberjack. We headed out 50 miles to a well-known wreck for this area. I was just gifted a Headhunter pole spear for Christmas and was anxious to use it. After we chummed for a while we jumped in and were noticed right away by some smaller Amberjacks and a couple of sharks. I took a few dives and waited for one of the larger Amberjack to come in. Finally a decent group came in and I noticed a larger one behind the school. I swam through the school and reached for the shot. Got lucky with a good holding meat shot right behind the head. After about a 20 minute fight using my Riffe float and trying to keep it from the sharks and Goliath grouper I finally got my hands in his gills. Both of the other divers were in the water still so I had to throw the 70Lb fish in the boat by myself which was a task in itself. Overall it was an awesome experience. Especially the fact that it was my very first shot and fish with a pole spear EVER.
