We were in the east Isaacs, about a stone’s throw from the rock in 30 foot of water I had already made various drops, looking for hogs hiding in the sea fans surrounding a large circular piece of reef. I had just surfaced from a dive when I saw the permit swimming underneath me; I took a quick breath dove down and threw a long shot with my 7ft Riffe pole spear, with no float line. The shot was not well placed, the fish fought hard and kept pulling me under I kicked and kicked to get to the top but it kept pulling me down. Finally the spear ripped out and I thought the fish was gone, to my surprise it swam underneath a ledge on the large piece of reef, I dove back down looked under the ledge and the fish was leaning against the rock, I then placed a second shot in the gill plate, pulled it from the ledge, then swam the fish back to the boat.
