I was diving In Dongara with my friends Troy Eggins, Ben Smith and Chris Shaw from the Western Australian Undersea Club, chasing mackerels and quality reef species. The conditions were almost perfect with low wind, very low swell, very low current, 20 meters visibility and a 24 degrees celsius water temperature. The pelagics were not to be seen but we had a few good reef fish in the esky by noon. It is at this time that I dove to the bottom at 21 meters and shot the lonely leopard coralgrouper (we call it coral trout here in western australia) with my 1.4 meters aluminimum reelgun, twin 16mm rubbers, 7.5mmx190cm spear. It holed up but I managed to get it in my hands after 3 other dives to extract it from the hole. When I realised its size once in the boat, I was stoked!
