My wife Jessica, our buddy Colby and his wife Jackie, and I rolled into South Dakota with big plans—world record blue suckers for me and Colby and a women’s record buffalo for Jessica. What we got the first three days was a whole lot of humble pie and a pile of small redhorse suckers. By the final morning, it was do-or-die. Something finally clicked—I found where the blue suckers had been hiding the entire time. Once I figured out the drift, it got western in a hurry. I landed two big blue suckers back-to-back, both good enough for world record contention. Trying to be a good friend, I explained everything to Colby and let him take the next drift. He gave it a solid run… and came up empty. After he cleared out, I slid back in for another pass. That’s when it happened—I spotted and shot my third blue sucker of the morning, and it turned out to be the biggest of the trip. To top it off, Jessica stuck what would have been the women’s world record smallmouth buffalo that same morning. Unfortunately, somewhere between freezing it and thawing it out, it got forgotten and spoiled—so now we’ve got no choice but to go back and do it again. After three slow days, the last morning turned into one we won’t forget—fast action, big fish, and just enough chaos to make it a proper adventure.
