We had anchored and were chumming trying to bring in some mutton snappers. This King Mackerel came up from the drop off and zoomed straight in like a torpedo. He turned and took off so our buddy threw his knife. I dove down following the knife and the mackerel circled back in to take a closer look. He was just out of range and starting to angle away from me, so I angled my body and looked away as if I wasn’t interested in him. One flick of his tail and he was in range and I popped over to the side and speared him. He took off, so I released the spear and held the float line to the surface. I let him drag me around the surface until I could see he was on the spear well and began to hand line him up. We had some issues with sharks so as soon as I got him up, I bear hugged him and dispatched him with my knife. Such incredibly fast and strong fish. It was an amazing experience!
