Departure at dawn heading offshore with my friends Valerio and Sergio, our eyes fixed on the horizon in search of pelagic fish. Suddenly, a chaotic flock of seagulls diving into the water signaled a massive school of sardines being hunted by predators. The water was remarkably crystal clear, holding a steady 22°C. It was my turn to dive. I descended to about 15/16 meters and chose to stay completely motionless, waiting in the deep silence. Out of nowhere, a pack of little tunny (alletterati) rushed in like silver missiles, tearing through the baitfish. Among them were some massive specimens. I lined up my shot and struck one of the biggest fish. It took off like a rocket, making the reel scream under the intense pressure. After a fierce, strategic fight lasting several minutes, I managed to overpower its incredible strength and bring it to the surface. As I finally embraced the fish in open water, I realized it was far larger than I had ever imagined. Lifting this stunning gift of the sea out of the water, the joyful shouts of Valerio and Sergio echoed from the boat, sealing an unforgettable day and what could likely be a new world record.
