First day diving in 46 degree water after 15 years of planning and anticipation. On our first drift, my 11yr old son Connor and I did two warm up dives in a strong current when my buddy Ole called that there was a big Halibut. I swam over until I saw the fish which I thought was about 120 lbs swimming in the current. I chased him down and wanted to put a shot in his head with the 8' Headhunter Nomad Pole Spear but right when I got down to him just as I was in range he kicked hard and I took a shot hitting him mid body on the lateral line through the spine. I got a second pole spear and when he laid down on the bottom took my time and breathed up and placed a perfect shot just behind the head which mortally wounded him. To be safe, I knifed him in the head then pole speared him again in the head with no slip tip and grabbed him and brought him to the surface by the spear. When I got him in my hands I realized how gigantic he was as I couldn't fit my arms around him. I put a loop of 6' rope around his tail, swam him to the boat and secured him to the cleat myself then it took four of us to pull him in to the boat. When we pulled him in immediately measured him (the legal size slot limit is 80cm-200cm) The measurement was exactly 198cm. A true giant and one of the coolest fish I've had my hands on. Thank you to Axel of Arctic Spearfishing for putting me on the fish of a lifetime, Ole for spotting the monster, and my son Connor for charging hard every day in tough conditions.
