I saw a wolfpack of otarus from the drone free swimming around the fad with a couple oceanic white tips. They were so big I thought they were small big eye tuna. Turns out they loved mahi scraps so much I tried free gaffing them from the boat which almost worked. Tried chucking a baited handline, dragging lure, but they wouldn’t bite. So jumped in w the gun and shot one fat fish which promptly was eviscerated by the sharks and I lost my shaft. the only option left was to whack one with a slip tip polespear and drag it onto the boat as fast as possible. luckily the sharks were now well fed and didn’t come back for our next drift. The fish came in for every piece of palu I threw like clockwork. i missed on a nice fish, and realized I was shooting too late. School turned back around, I peppered one more piece of mahi and this fish came up right where I wanted him to. Hit him mid body and as soon as the slip tip set I was dragged under for the ride of my life! Holy moly these tuna are strong Without having a breakaway rig, this was not a smart way to shoot a powerful fish. but this behavior never happens, and it’s all I had on the boat. Sometimes you have to work what you got... can’t believe i landed it. This whole time we were 8 miles offshore and it was flat calm. Lauren and I were both in the water off the back of the boat, and I told her if I shot one to sprint to the boat as fast as possible and reverse back to me. She still managed to film the shot and me being pulled underwater. The fish quickly tired out after being dragged backwards and I was able to get it on board before the sharks returned.
