I was diving off San José Island in the Sea of Cortez in November. The conditions were excellent—blue water and a light current. I had chased a pargo under a ledge and spent a while trying to find it, even as everyone else was ready to move to a new spot. I insisted on making one last dive to look under the ledge, and that’s when this huge triggerfish appeared. I managed to get a solid shot on it, and when I brought it back to the boat I realized it was bigger than any I’d ever taken before.
