Matt Suiter and I had been planning this trip with Seamus and Liam Culhane since The USOA Freshwater National Tournament banquet in April. The trip started out pretty rough for me when severe weather forced the cancellation of my flight and there were no hotel rooms available so I slept in a ditch with my 5mm Oceanammo wetsuit serving as a blanket (Luckily it was as warm out of water as it is under). Suiter and the Culhane bros. dove the first day without me due to my travel woes, but picked me up at the airport promptly at 4pm. We dove deep that first evening down past 45’ where the depth and waning daylight squeezed every particle of light from the icy water. A handful of 29” Walleye later and we were out of the water searching for cold liquid refreshment and a warm bed in a doublewide trailer down by the riverside. Waking up refreshed on day 2 we hit it hard, spearing 14 different species between us all in 12+ hours of deep diving. The last day dawned rainy, but with only 4 hours before our flight we were undaunted. A few dives into the day, Suiter came to the boat with a World Record sized Blue Sucker! Our journey had been rewarded! After another hour of hard diving, I glanced over and spotted this large sucker that I skewered and hauled into the boat, dashing Matt’s dreams of recording the Blue Sucker record! A few buffalo (ancient and otherwise) later and it was off to the airport for us weary divers. The flight home was also wonky, but alas, the TSA let me board with my WR fish in my carry-on, and the rest is history!
