We spotted a school of wahoo in Fiji. I had a shot earlier in the day and hit one square in the spinal part of the tail but it bounced off of that fish for whatever reason. Chasing wahoo using a pole spear can be a very frustrating obsession. For years Jaga and i have tried and watched as multiples of fish swim by without us getting close. Jaga and my friends, Jeff Pagliarulo and Clay Thomas, decided to put down their spearguns and we all focused on trying to get the record fish. We knew that i had to get closer to make the shot count. Even then we needed a little bit of luck to keep the sharks away and to land this fish of a lifetime. Our trusty skipper, Barnaby, saw the school approaching. When i entered the water, the wahoo were flashing their zebra stripes and in kill mode. Large fish were slashing all around trying to feed. I threw a chum and saw a giant fish zero in and head straight for the bait. I swam fast directly at the chum, meeting the wahoo at the opportune time. The beast turned at the last second giving me a side shot. The pole spear stuck this time and the fish took off like a rocket. Several hundred yards later i caught up to the fish that was now tired from fighting my float lines and buoy. The fish as subdued and weighed off the beach in Fiji. We ate part of the fish and gave the rest to the local villagers.
