I took a road trip up to Idaho for the for the July 1st release of new spearfishing regulations allowing the take of select game fish in select waters. The luck well was shallow as I dove for Northern Pike and Walleye, but I kept seeing an odd fish that I couldn't identify. Turns out they were Tench, a non-game fish! I started searching for one over 5 lbs and finally, on the last dive before I had to return home, I found one right at dusk. The light was low. It surprised me as it swam past me about 2 ft from my left shoulder. I shot at its shadow as it swam away and got lucky. Not a big pike, but I'll take it!
