After swimming around for 2-3 hours without seeing much but a few cod and pollock I came across this one laying on the bottom. I went down and shot it and it didn’t move as if I had thrown a toothpick at an elephant. I called the boat over for another gun then went down shot it again where it fought for some time until I was able to tie a rope around the tail. I then climbed into the bottom and pulled it up and realized how big it really was and I was very pleased! I asked Roberto some questions after receiving this application. Following is our consolidated dialogue: ..................................... Roberto, Thank you for attaching the updated story. 2 questions: 1) was the second gun unloaded when it was handed to you? 2) how many feet of line was on the rope when you started raising the halibut from the boat? Hello Andy no the gun was not loaded I loaded the small rob Allen speargun and then shot the fish again. As for the rope I climbed into the back of the boat with the end of the rope in my hand and then when I stood inside the boat I started pulling it in over the back of the boat over the swim platform. ........................................................ How many feet of line do you think was between the bottom of the boat and the fish? I’d say maybe 5-7 feet of line being there was a knot on one side around the tail I did in the water. The rope was about 8 ft long maybe, it was a dock line to be exact. Using my float and float line. I pulled and clipped the float down the float line as you would a tuna or any other big fish until I reached the monofilament shooting line. Once I reached the monofilament shooting line I then tied a dock line to his tail to bring him on the boat. ........................................................... How did you get the fish off the bottom and up to 8 feet below the surface? Using my float and float line. I pulled and clipped the float down the float line as you would a tuna or any other big fish until I reached the monofilament shooting line. Once I reached the monofilament shooting line I then tied a dock line to his tail to bring him on the boat.
