The morning conditions were beautiful with sapphire blue 100+ft vis and 72F water when 2 shy wahoo cruised into view. We began a back and forth game with the throw flasher and they teased us by disappearing and reappearing from view. Finally, the duo got comfortable and appeared to head in my direction. I waited until the bigger fish got closer before I pointed my body diagonal towards the direction it was swimming and took a dive leveling out at around 25ft. Avoiding looking directly at the fish and keeping my gun tucked in, I glanced over and saw the fish looked relaxed. It cruised nearer so I repositioned my body more acutely towards the fish, accelerated with a couple kicks to close the distance, extended my gun and pulled the trigger—the shaft entered behind the pec fin and exited out the skull. Instantly, the wahoo rolled over and even before I swam up for air I could hear Nic whooping at the surface. No sharks were circling yet but we didn’t celebrate much in the water because they come fast there- I pulled the fish up and swam it over to the boat.
