With the mercury hovering at the 42-degree mark, I knew it was most likely going to be my last dive before the lakes froze over. So, I packed my car and made the trek to where I knew I could find some nice fish. As I got to the spot it was lightly snowing and overcast, but I was undeterred. My Garmin Descent MK2 showed a very cold 39°F water temp. But with it being that cold I knew there would be fish and my Spearpro 5mm wetsuit would ward off the elements. After diving for 2 hours and making drop after drop, I only managed to find one Lake Trout pup for supper. I packed up and started to head home. After thawing in the car for a few minutes, I decided to give my last effort and try to harvest one more fish for the family. I popped in the water by the dam, Viz was about 15ft and water was still very cold. I looked up and saw a group of stocker rainbows swimming near the surface with a wary look on their faces. Clutching the 65cm Spearpro Armada, I kicked down to 28ft and through the amber lens of my XS Scuba Ocean Pro Pitviper mask I see a tank of a fish! I lined up on the beast- I wasn’t going to take any chances of it getting off so I placed a holding shot right in the thickest part of the body. As soon as my frigid fingers wrapped around its girth, I knew it was the speargun world record rainbow trout!
