It was my first trip hunting the Pacific side of Mexico- on the second day of the trip we decided to dive a few mountain edges just offshore a nearby Island.. On my first few dives I didn't see too much except a few smaller fish so I kept swimming. As I followed the rocks parallel to shore, I decided to take another dive on some of the semi-deeper rocks that extended out further. As I dive down I noticed a large round shaped fish which I almost immediately correlated the shape with it being a Triggerfish... As I realized this the fish started gaining speed away from me so I took a quick but long shot . Luckily I hit the fish just behind the head & sent it hiding for cover underneath a nearby boulder. I took a quick breathe (it was only 35-40ft) and went down to retrieve the fish. The fish pulled right out of the hole & I surfaced with it without any issues. I made sure to keep the beak away from me as I swam the fish back to the boat- then i tossed it in the cooler upon arrival and kept diving for more fish. It wasn't until my friend/Capt Ben mentioned that the Triggerfish I shot was big enough to be considered a possible record did I realize that I should probably weigh the fish & check. I was happy to see the fish I had was about a half pound bigger than the standing Blunthead Triggerfish record so I submitted it. (For full video & more- search Slingin Steel on YouTube ) Big Thanks to Ben, My girl Taylor, Neptonics & everyone else on the trip that helped make it happen. Also thanks to IUSA for managing all the records 💯
