After flying for 10 hours, driving 4, and sleeping 2, we suited up and hit the water at sunrise. I swam out 100 feet from shore, and clipped my belt reel to my spear handle. I did a quick “checkout dive” to get the air bubbles out of my suit and “warm up” for a long day ahead. As I lay in the bottom in 38’ of water stretching my lungs, this fish swam up to me unexpectedly! In my sleep deprived surprise, I slowly reached back and found the Redtide Roller pole spear handle, loaded in one smooth motion, lined up and let fly! It was a perfect shot in the heart, just behind the gill plate, and I set the slip tip, and caught the belt line in my hand. I slowly swam to the surface paying out belt reel line. I immediately yelled to my dive partner Greg Hall to come over and he video taped me retrieving and securing the fish. It was an anticlimactic end to a long saga that stretched over 3 years in the making. Underwater and out of water still photography by the king of freshwater himself, Big Jake Lords.
