I have dove many times at a wreck off the beach, and taken few cuberas in the past. This was the last dive of the day as conditions were declining in terms of vis. I dove down and look under the boat to see the largest cubera, just sitting under the boat I had ever seen. I came back up and excited and said to the captain I was going to bend my shaft to get a point blank shot!( had back up on board given rpior catches) Back to bottom, I took a point blank shot but fish entangled on rebar under boat. After numerous dives, I went down, cut its gills as he laid upside down tangeld and came up to breath up. I went again to cut the shooting line and he was still alive unfortunately! One last dive, I grabbed his tail as he was weak from bleeding out, and pulled him out by putting my hand all the way into his mouth to bring him up. Perhaps not the smartest of moves given the teeth, but I was not leaving him barely in reach, and knew he was giant!! I was super happy finally to break record, and shared the catch with the owner, Mike, the captain and the locals.
