My buddy Erik and I were diving a rocky ledge about 100 yards from the shore which was known to have fish and current. The visibility was a little poor for Hawaii - about 70ft and snowy. As I am drifting a long I see an arch that looks like it might hold fish, I drop down and I am greeted by this large omilu swimming confidently towards me. I smoothly pull the band on the pole spear tight and aim down the my arm. I watch for the moment he turns and gives me that broadside shot, I aim right above the pectoral fin hoping to hit the spine and I miss the stone shot but secure the fish with a solid holding shot. Weakened but still pulling hard enough so I couldn't make it back to the surface. I hold the band loop letting him fight the resistance of the rubber, but my dive time is getting up there. I know he wants to get back to his cave and reason I should be able to find him if I let go so I release the spear and head to the surface to catch my breath, I know better than to risk my life over gear or a fish. I ask for my buddy on the boat to throw me my belt reel and she does quickly. I take a big breath and swim down to the exhausted fish laying on the bottom, I secure my pole spear to the belt reel and swim up working the fish to the surface. I grab it, brain it, and clean up my reel line. With the fish in the cooler, it's time to celebrate with some panko crusted omilu.
