We were out doing exactly this, looking for world record black grouper! We anchored at our favorite spot and jumped in. Didn't take much time until we spotted 3 traveling together. My boyfriend took off following a huge one and I picked the second biggest. I followed him for a bit until he hid under a ledge. I dove down and right before I got to him he popped out. I took a long shot and managed to hit him. He went crazy dragging the spear with me holding on to the elastic back up the reef. The wire on the release tip got caught on a coral head and caused it to rip the fish open and come off. I quickly saw where he ended up because of the amount of blood coming from the hole. Thankfully my spear was fine and I was able to put another shot in him. Calling at the top of my lungs for my boyfriend to come back so I could use his spear to put a second shot in. I was able to extract him not long after. Got him back to the boat and went crazy celebrating!
