My boyfriend, Cole, and I were visiting a remote island village in Fiji and went out spearfishing 7 miles off shore with Captain Lolo on Willy’s new boat. We went out for one final sunset mission and had about an hour before sunset. Cole and I were drifting with a flasher along the side of a reef when two Walu swam in. I took a dive and got a shot on the bigger of the two fish with my headhunter nomad roller pole spear. I hit the fish mid body and it ran hard. The slip tip did not penetrate through the entire fish and the shot was slowly pulling out as the fish ran against my float line and float. I could see the slip tip was only in the fish by a small flap of skin. I called to the boat for the driver to bring me my second pole spear. I worked the fish up towards the surface with my float line, I made a drop with the second pole spear. I got close and made a good holding shot that hit the spine and stopped the fish. I pulled the fish to the surface, grabbed It by the gills and brained It before handing it to Cole on the boat. Very excited to land my first ever Walu, on a pole spear and in Fiji!
