It was a gorgeous day, unfortunately a gorgeous day with terrible visibility. The water was pretry calm but with occasional rollers due to boaters. It was definitely murky. We were just south of Grand Haven's South Pier, diving the rocky area for freshwater drum. After tracking through the thermal layers, we started to find a few sweet spots. It was tough to track anything though, due to the murky vis. After about what was about a 30 second recon dive, I spotted what looked like a good size drum hanging around the rocks about 15 feet down. I was feeling low on air, so popped up, did a quick breathe up, and went back down for him with the pole spear ready. I creeped along the rocks, and fortunately he hadn't gone far. He was done for at a range of about 10 feet- couldn't have been further due to the poor visibility. Brought him up, swam him over to our cooler on the pier, snapped some pics and talked to the crowd about spearfishing- what better way to promote the sport than try to set some records where it isn't widely done!
