We wanted to target Red Snapper before they closed again in the Gulf, and John Ryan Colvin offered to take his boat for the day. Kyle, Preston, John Ryan and I met at the boat around 10AM and headed out. Our first spot was what they guys called a "warm up dive" spot. I took the first dive to check the conditions. I dove through a thick layer of murk, which opened up to a hazy green on the bottom. At first, I didn't see anything. Then, when my eyes adjusted I noticed a very large snapper sitting in the sand. I lined up my overhead shot the best I could, pulled the trigger, and hit it! It wasn't a stone shot so the fish went crazy and tried to tangle my shaft and line up in the reef. I pulled and swam backward and luckily it untangled itself. I secured the fish at the surface, not realizing how big it was until I threw it in the boat. Everyone on the boat shot two red snappers each, all weighing between 22 and 26 pounds. We celebrated on the ride in with Preston's famous boat guac and PBR beer.
