I made a special trip down south to go out for opening day of grouper season. At the second spot of the day I got in the water and dove down with my light to look under a rock ledge and made eye contact with a big grouper. I went back up for a breath and after diving down a few times I saw he had backed up to another opening under the rock, but there was another smaller gag in the way. I pulled the band up on the pole spear, dove down, nudged the smaller gag and quickly released shooting the big one. He swam up towards the other end of the rock and tried to escape and I had to go under the rock up to my waist to pull out the fish. I was so relived when I threw the fish over the gunnel and it was finally in the boat.
